A few months ago, I bought the new iPhone 4s. I bought the app Instragram. It's an app that turns your images into a lo-fi medium format camera by using post filters. I kinda thought this was a kitchy thing to do, but that was before owning an iPhone. Now it's my favorite app. What makes it stand out beyond other is the connection with photo friends who uses the app. Here are some the images that i have taken since downloading the app.

Before the new year, I photographed my friend and yoga instructor, Sarah Plotkin. She was so much fun to shoot. The contortions her body made were so amazing to photograph. I really want to do video of her getting into these positions. Here are some images, more on my flickr.

I shot this with my friend Jason in Guangzhou, China. It was this massive fishing dock behind our hotel. it was bustling all night and day. It's a bunch of raw clips edited together; pretty simple edit.

Photographer of the Month: Mary Ellen Mark

Mary Ellen Mark is street photographer who inspired my photography in college. Her revealing, uncropped images were an inspiration for me as a photojournalist. I never liked cropping my images too much. I shoot for what I wanted in the camera rather in the computer.

I believe in today's world of iPhones and camera-phones, everyone does some form of street photography now. Usually for humor, cuteness, updates of their own life or news, but Mark's photograph's are deeper than that. They are reminiscent of paintings of realsim in the 1850's. Like she explains in the video, it reveals truth. Mary Hellen Mark is the modern day realism artist.

Cool Photographer: Sebastian Mlynarski

Sebastian Mlynarski is an awesome photographer that caught my eye when I saw this album cover for Cold Cave's Cherish the Light Years.

This photograph (on right) of band member Jenifer Clavin is nearly perfect I believe. The smoothness of the shades of gray throughout the photograph, but it has great contrast. Her eye is so well lit but has that great texture of the shadow from her knitted hood. Very classical, dark and beautiful. The flowers I think give it that classical painting look to the composition.

Mlynarski has many other great photos on his website. Also check out his personal work. He has also done music videos which is a major plus in my book.

I found this image of mine from my old Journal days.

It's a photograph covering Farm Days. Where farmers basically have an open house for families who rarely seen the inner workings of farms (i.e. farm life, where their food comes from). I tagged along with the cute family. I was able to capture this nice image of them at this moment where they were alone together; enjoying the view and country air.

After seeing a taping of "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" at TPAC. I saw a large orange glow from a distance with a huge plume of white smoke. Naturally, I drove to the fire to see what happened. Luckily, I had my camera gear in my car.

It was a cheap hotel that looked very shady, but had beautiful teal railings with yellow speckled walls. I thought it would be a great place to do a shoot with her. You can see more on my flickr.

I visited Chicago for the first time a couple weeks ago. Amanda and I had such an amazing time. We booked a great hotel, went shopping, ate a ton of food. The Chicago weather did damper the photographic experience. A cold snap came by and gave us rain, 40 degree weather and, of course, WIND. Last Doughboy

Frank Buckles, the last surviving World War I U.S. veteran, passed away last night. I had the privilege of photographing Mr. Buckles several times during my times at The Journal.

Buckles lived in a gorgeous home outside of Charles Town, WV. He was one of the most fascinating person I have ever photographed.

This is a shot when, then, Governor Joe Manchin honored Buckles at his home in 2007.

Tell Tale Nights

I recently photographed nashville indie rock band Tale Tell Nights. We had a lot of fun shooting together at a small park in nashville. The location was perfect for the band. Tell Tale were awesome for bringing props, dressing well and knowing how to pose. They blended perfectly with Sunnyside, a 1852 restored house at the park.

New Video! Contra Dancing

New video project completed. I wanted to do a more journalistic style video; using ambient audio and music.

I shot this with my friend's sony HD handicam. Videography or video journalism has been a style I have been wanting to explore. I really enjoyed doing this. I cant wait to explore this more often. Next time, I'll use a DSLR ( more control, better color correction and overall quality) and have more quotes. I realize the challenge of finding good quotes, it's the foundation of a story.

I'll post more videos from china in it's same theme to music, but i will also post some raw videos from the trip and other mini vids using ambient audio.

Egypt Protest in Nashville

On Tuesday evening, about 100 people gathered in Nashville for a protest against Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

Protesters from various ages and backgrounds came together to join with the millions of protestors in Cairo, Egypt 6,000 miles away.

Update: On Friday, Hosni Mubarak

resigned as president and the Egyptian Military will assume power until democratic elections.

First shoot of the year

My friend, Jason, needed some help with shooting head shots. I gave him some pointers and edited the image.

I think he did a great job. Nice composing and positioning. She was wearing a nose ring, I didn't realize (that is probably a headshot taboo) until after the shoot. It was a lot easier to remove than expected.

In turn for helping him, Jason invited me to photo the band he manages at the studio. It was blast!

The band is called How I Became the Bomb. They were recording some new stuff that sounded really good, very catchy. Every time i see these images, I start thinking about the songs. You can see more pics from my Flickr.

Some of my photographs will be featured at Fall fashion show at Local Honey, a local retail store. I photographed for designers Jamie and The Jones.

It was last second shoot. I was called to this shoot b/c the photographer bailed out last minute. The model, and my friend, thought of me and called me to do a very impromptu shoot.

It was a lot fun and hope to do this more in the future.

Today at the Frist Center, I saw work from fantastic photographer/ sculptor, Tokihiro Sato. These images were created within the camera. He flashed lights into the camera during hours-long exposure, creating a Shinto-eque look.

I have been watching the NCAA tourney these past few weeks. WVU has made it to the Elite Eight and faces a tough opponent, Kentucky, this weekend. One the star players for WVU is Da'Sean Butler, a senior power forward who has been the leader for the Mountaineers this season. I remember photographing him in his freshman year during the 2006-07 season for the Journal.

Artist of the Month: February

Alexander McQueen (3/17/69 - 2/11/10) is a fantastic fashion designer who made the walkway his gallery. The Londoner won British Designer of the Year four times.

Despite his storied career, McQueen committed suicide this month.

Honestly, this artist became one of those not-knowing-until-they-pass-away cases. I have always been a fan a fashion and enjoyed how fashion designers keep pushing the limits. But I never got into it as so recognize each designer. When AMQ passed away, his work sample were published everywhere and I was really stunned to see how amazing his has been. These are a few examples of his work. I love the first image, looks like an illustration. Just looking at these images gives me an even higher respect for these designers.

Radiolab presents: Moments by Will Hoffman. This films is a celebration of life that was inspired by David Eagleman's book, Sum.

Radiolab is one of the best shows on the radio. You can download the podcast or check your local NPR listings for broadcast times. It's a show dedicated to more science and theories than world news like most of NPR.

Here is a photo of my dad in 2000. I was a senior at high school and it's one of my favorite photos I taken of my dad. It was taken with my old Minolta 35mm. After school, I would occasionally go up to his office and hang out.

His office had huge windows which overlooked the Ohio River. It really great view and a great place to shoot.

Finally! Nashville got some snowfall.

Not that much snow, but I'm not going to complain.

The creek at my house froze over the day before the snow.

Since the new year, temperatures here have been below 20 degrees with some harsh winds. Time for some espresso.

This premiered on one of the New Year celebration networks. This video is sooo DOPE! I love how rappers are breaking the mold of rap videos. This is so visually amazing and I love this song as well. Watch it a few times and enjoy.

I don't know who directed this, but I have feeling it may be Mark Romanek.

I saw "Avatar" not too long ago. A lot of hype was developed around it. It started with good stuff i.e. James Cameron's first film since "Titanic" and how much money he spent making this with new special effect technology. Then the first trailer came and everyone was disappointed; so was I.

After seeing the film in IMAX 3-D, i was floored. The story-line is nothing new, but its presentation is. It's the reason to see movies in theaters. Any promotion made by this film either by trailer online, tv or poster does it no justice. You have sit and watch it in a movie theater yourself. Whether it's 2-D, 3-D or IMAX 3-D, you should go see this film.

Sorry to be a corporate tool, but these vids are pretty funny. I love Lupe Fiasco and KRS-One (one of my favorite rappers of all time) rhymes. There should be more themed rapping like this. I also like the backward snowfall. I think they got that from Scorsese's "Bringing In the Dead." Nonetheless, it's a funny and a good holiday commercial.

I love how these puppets move so well and the classic rap video look of mirrored lights. Merry Christmas everyone and Happy New Year.
