Photographer of the Month: Mary Ellen Mark

Mary Ellen Mark is street photographer who inspired my photography in college.  Her revealing, uncropped images were an inspiration for me as a photojournalist.  I never liked cropping my images too much.  I shoot for what I wanted in the camera rather in the computer.

I believe in today's world of iPhones and camera-phones, everyone does some form of street photography now.  Usually for humor, cuteness, updates of their own life or news, but Mark's photograph's are deeper than that.  They are reminiscent of paintings of realsim in the 1850's.  Like she explains in the video, it reveals truth.  Mary Hellen Mark is the modern day realism artist.

Cool Photographer: Sebastian Mlynarski

Sebastian Mlynarski is an awesome photographer that caught my eye when I saw this album cover for Cold Cave's Cherish the Light Years.

This photograph (on right) of band member Jenifer Clavin is nearly perfect I believe.  The smoothness of the shades of gray throughout the photograph, but it has great contrast. Her eye is so well lit but has that great texture of the shadow from her knitted hood.  Very classical, dark and beautiful.  The flowers I think give it that classical painting look to the composition.

Mlynarski has many other great photos on his website.  Also check out his personal work. He has also done music videos which is a major plus in my book.

Tokihiro Sato

Today at the Frist Center, I saw work from fantastic photographer/ sculptor, Tokihiro Sato. These images were created within the camera. He flashed lights into the camera during hours-long exposure, creating a Shinto-eque look.

Photographer of the Month - August: Gordon Parks

Gordon Parks (November 30, 1912 - March 7, 2006) was also a huge influence on me as a photographer. One of the first photographer I began to admire in high school and college. NPR recently had a photo slideshow of many of famous works. Parks photographed all types of styles; from photojournalism to fashion for Vogue. He also dabbled in film making - a small film called "Shaft." Ever head of it?

In the 1940s, a photographer named Gordon Parks broke into a scene that had previously been dominated by white men. He was the first black photographer to work for magazines like Life andVogue, and the first to work for the Farm Security Administration and the Office of War Information. Born into poverty and the youngest of 15, he had a sensibility about poor living conditions. But as a renowned photographer, he also had access to some of the most famed athletes and celebrities, like Muhammad Ali and Ingrid Bergman.

Photographer of the Month - June: Mr. Tolando

Mr. Toledano is a British born photographer who lives in NYC. He has done many fashion and editorial shoots for several publications. He also had some gallery showing of his art projects which I feel is some of stronger and personal work.

Photographer of the Month - May: Eolo Perfido

A new series I am starting with this blog. Nabil, I guess, was the first photographer of this series.

Elolo was the first photographer I bookmarked years ago. Since then, his career and work has blossomed. He worked for Gatorade, GQ and NY Times to name a few. He is originally from France but now resides in Italy. Enjoy.
